>> top stories we are following on this friday november 8th. a teenager is being tried as an adult and facing serious charges for allegedly burning another teen. we'll hear from the suspects family. >> 25-million people in the phillipines are facing one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded. we have an update. >> the 16-year-old boy accused of setting another teenager on fire aboard an a-c transit bus is being charged as an adult. the suspect, richard thomas, made his first court appearance yesterday. kron 4's dan kerman reports on what thomas is accused of doing and the charges he is >> we are learning more on what might have motivated him to set a person on the

fire. he slept in the back of ac transit bus. court documents stated that he admitted that he said the man on fire. he was apparently wearing a kilt like skirts at the time and he does not identified as male or female. >> outside of the arraignment the suspect's family apologized and stated that he is a remorseful and is writing a letter of apology. they denied that he was a hateful person. >> what kind of boy is he? >> he >> despite the protest thomas, has been charged with a hate crime. he has also been charged with felony assault in bodily

injury. thomas, and did not enter a plea and that will likely come on tuesday. the family has been given the extra time to hire an attorney. >> happening now. at least three people are dead, as what could be the strongest storm ever recorded moves across the philippines. some 25-million people are in the path of the storm, and andrew spencer reports the level of devastation is expected to be immense. >> the closest comparison the west can make to super typhoon haiyan would be a category five hurricane. "let's put this into context: a cat-5 hurricane is 156mph. this is 195, gusting to 235." >> known locally in the philippines as typhoon yolanda, this monster storm may be the strongest tropical cyclone on earth to ever make landfall. the storm struck friday morning, shutting down several airports and grounding hundreds of flights in the philipines.

early reports have already noted several people dead, and officials expect the death toll to rise. >> "no one in america can even imagine what a 195mph wind would do to their home. this is going to be a bowling ball that rolls right through the southern philippines devastating everything in its path. for 20 miles on both sides, there will be nothing left; there won't be a home standing." >> some aid groups are already mobilizing, where another disaster last month killed more than 200 people. >> "our concern in bohol is mainly in the earthquake- affected areas. there was a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in mid-october which left nearly 350,000 people displaced." >> with possible flooding, land slides, and tsunami- level storm surge, the government has moved 125- thousand people to evacuation shelters. >> "people typically go to schools, churches, other government buildings when they can. the question is: are they strong enough to hold up to 300 km winds?" >> i'm andrew spencer, reporting

here's a live look from our mount tam cam over the bay bridge. it is clear skies and certain spots. as for the temperatures we are waking up to 40's and '50's. 47 in san mateo. this afternoon will bring us 50's for places like the daily city. it will be 70's for places like pleasanton and livermore. high pressure is still in place. we may see rain as early as this weekend. most of the activity will stay to the north. we may need our umbrellas as early as monday night. >> your 7 day around the bay shows the rain continues into tuesday. you can expect sunny skies by thursday. >> there is a lot of fog outside and i am pretty sure

this is the bay bridge toll plaza, you can barely see it. there is not a lot of traffic but i can tell you from experience that there is a lot a road work and chp has issued a traffic advisory. you should check your speed when you are riding across the span. the san mateo bridge also has fog but it is a smooth ride. the golden gate bridge is also foggy and you can barely count the cars out there. we're off to a good start. >> a mother and her two-week old infant has been reunited in sunnyvale. this whole incident started on tuesday when the father mesut guler abducted henry romero and an amber alert was issued. the father 22 year old mesut guler was arrested wednesday just across the u=s mexican guler is being held right now at the pima county jail in arizona.

the santa clara county district attorney's office is now seeking to have guler extradited back to the bay area to face charges. >> the process is moving through the courts. right now we're looking for a warrant to be issued. that will allow us to extradite him back here. >> the sunnyvale department of public safety says it appears the abduction was the end result of a dispute between patricia romero the mother and guler. police say he wanted to move out of state -- possibly the east coast. while romero wanted in the bay area. and >> we see it all the time. people glued to their cell phones, unaware of what's going on around them. francisco are asking the public to stay off their cell phones to avoid becoming the next victim of a crime. mayor ed lee along with police chief greg suhr and the s-f-m-t-a have launched the "eyes up, phone down" campaign. a one million dollar federal grant is being invested into putting more police officers on muni buses and light rail vehicles to reduce theft on public transit.

city leaders say two-thirds of the robberies in san francisco involve smartphones. >> >> also new this morning. hayward police are searching for a missing at- risk man. edward moore has been missing since thursday afternoon. the 77-year-old man takes medication for both dementia and diabetes. he is about five- foot seven inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds. edward also has a tattoo on his left forearm. he was last seen wearing a green shirt, camouflage shorts, white socks and sandals. police say the man may have been seen at the downtown hayward bart station. and it is possible that he will go to east oakland where he used to live. >> fema has denied continued aid to tuolomne county for the damage caused by the rim fire which burned for more than two months. tuolomne county will now have to rebuild roads and other damaged infrastructure with only state and local resources. officials say fema has

declined to extend a major disaster declaration because they found the damage to the county was not severe enough to require additional federal aid. state officials say they will be re-assessing the cost of repairs and could possibly file an appeal to fema by next month. >> twitters ipo was a success. people seem to think they are worth a lot of money. a lot of companies are stating that they have made it 0 profit. what do you think will happen within the next week? we will have the story coming up.

themselves in these positions. >> house speaker john boehner released a statement calling on the president to support a new house measure to allow anyone to keep their coverage if they wish, otherwise an apology is a meaningless. >> 54 people were arrested last night during a walmart protest. the demonstrators gathered outside the walmart in l-a's chinatown to show support for workers who walked off the job demanding better pay. hundreds crowded cesar chavez avenue, blocking traffic and filling the sidewalk. apparently some in the group did not disperse when ordered by police to do so and they were arrested. >> the nationwide protests in support of higher wages for food industry and retail workers may pay off. senate majority leader harry reid says he wants to pass a minimum wage hike this month. reid made the announcement following a closed meeting on the issue with democrats on capitol hill. most republicans are expected to oppose the increase, but offer ation propo

police response to the massacre. >> a colorado judge says dating website records of james holmes can be used against him in court. holmes' lawyers asked the judge to suppress the records from the websites.adult friend finder dot-com and match dot-com. he apparently asked users on the sites. "will you visit me in prison?" .which prosecutors say may show holmes mental state before the shooting. holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of killing 12 people and injuring 70 in a denver movie theater in 20- 12. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. >> some parents are scratching their heads over less restrictive head lice policies that allow children with live bugs in their hair to return to the classroom. some school nurses are no longer sending home "lice notes" to parents of other children in the classroom. the policy shift is designed to help keep children from missing class, shield children with lice from embarrassment and protect their privacy. their reasoning is that lice are not dangerous or infectious, and they're easy to treat.

oct. 19. >> san francisco city attorney is suing an internet café accused of illegal gambling. net stop.in the excelsior district.allegedly hosts the gambling. the lawsuit says the café offers computerized slot machines and sells electronic "points" that can be redeemed for cash. authorities also say the opening of the business corresponded with a rise in crime in the area. the lawsuit asks net stop be declared a public nuisance, closed for a year and forced to forfeit and sell its gambling equipment. >> santa rosa police arrested two young teenagers early this morning on suspicion of committing a half-dozen vehicle burglaries near the coddingtown mall, a police sergeant said. police responded at 2:15 a.m. to a report of vehicle break-ins in the area of range and jennings avenues, sgt. rich celli said. arriving officers saw three suspects

morning. futures trading shows all three indexes positive this morning. investors are worried the federal reserve might cut back on its economic stimulus as early as next month, after a suprisingly strong report on u-s economic growth. as a result, the stock market had it's worst day since august yesterday. here's a look at the closing numbers. the dow fell 152 points. the nasdaq lost 74. and the s and p 500 lost 23. opening bell today at 6:30. >> it is going to take longer than expected to fix those of broken botsolts on the new
